Dishonor in Edoras

by Ragetek

You enter the bar after a hard day of slaying elves, and somebody grabs your shoulder from behind. You quickly spin around and throw the person to the ground, but are immediately ashamed to discover him to be an unarmed stranger! As you help him up you notice he doesn't look to good and ask him what is the matter.

"Appledore..." he whispers. "I thought you knew him."

"No I didn't," you reply. "But what happenned to him?"

"Edoras...Edoras is what happenned to him, or rather where it happenned. Sit down if you care to hear."

The stranger sits down in a darkened booth and smiles at your kindness as you sit down to listen to him.

"We rode to Edoras at full speed, our blood boiling with anticipation. Infidels roamed Edoras and with the help of the Sons of Ulfang and the Dragons of Middle Earth, we were going to cleanse it. I love killing infidels, but that day Amarthatar was looking elsewhere, for the battle went awry from the beginning. They were waiting for us."

He pauses as if reliving the moment in his mind and as you are about to ask him if he is all right he bangs the table with his fist and looks you straight in the eye.

"We should have known they were cowards! We were outnumbered from the beginning, and reinforcements just kept coming! We fought with all we had, but we are not immortal like the cursed elves and fatigue was setting in. We decided to retreat and Appledore bravely brought up the rear. But he was cut off from us and was quickly surrounded by them. Some of them pursued us and formed an inpregnable wall between us and Appledore. The DoME do have dragon blood in them, for Appledore fought them with the ferocity I have only seen in one other being, Smaug the Dragon."

A door slams closed as another customer enters the bar. The stranger seems amused at the site of a dwarf smoking a pipe, but his eyes tell the truth of what is going on in his mind and he continues the story.

"Smaug was killed by a single arrow you know. But it took more than that to bring Appledore down. We didn't see it... we..heard it. While we swung away at our attackers we could hear the roar of mixed pain and anger as his attackers were getting the better of him. More reinforcements came and this time we knew we couldn't fight anymore. Amarthatar has not made me immortal yet, and I am more valuable to him alive than dead. I began chanting and a blue mist surrounded the Son of Ulfang and I. We headed to Fangorn and managed to lose them. We waited for hours until we could descrie the lights of Edoras slowly disappearing and knew they were not expecting any more attacks."

The stranger pauses and his fists clench as his eyes get a strange blue hue to them.

"We went back to see what had happened to Appledore. There was only broken breastplate left, which we knew was his. Traces of blood were all over the ground and we knew Appledore's fate..."

Suddenly the stranger stands up and knocks the table over! Everyone in the bar turns to look at him and the dwarf that had come in last wields his grim battleaxe in preparation for battle.

The stranger begins chanting, "Aglar'ni Amarthatar, agalr'ni Amarthatar...."

A blue mist rises as his chanting gets louder and louder, "Aglar'ni Amarthatar, aglar'ni Amarthatar...."

Suddenly he threw his hands in the air and with a loud explosion he disappeared! Everyone in the bar slowly went back to their business and I sat down to think of the events he had just told me about, and to ponder the sad fate of Appledore.
